5 Healthy & Fun Snacks for Kids
Apr 04, 2025As we head into the school holidays, with Easter just around the corner, it's the perfect time to spend quality time with your kids in the kitchen.
I (Dr Mary) have two kids, aged 2 and 11.
I enjoy cooking with my kids, as long as it is not too onerous. Easy is key for me! I find cooking together is not only a great way to enjoy each other’s company, but also a great way to encourage kids to develop an interest in food beyond the usual sugary treats.
I have said it before - and I’ll say it again, the key to enjoying cooking with kids - is ease. For us, it has to be easy. Below, we have shared some easy and healthy snacks and treats that are fun for kids of all ages!
Time to Roll Up Those Little Sleeves!
Here are five easy and healthy treats to make with your kids these school holidays:
#1 Homemade Frozen Yogurt
- Mix full-fat unsweetened yogurt with vanilla essence and your favourite berries (about 150g berries to 500g yogurt). You can add optional sweetener if you like, but I find that you don’t need to - the berries and vanilla make it plenty sweet.
- Blend raspberries and yogurt with a spoon, fill into popsicle moulds, and freeze overnight. Yum!
#2 Chocolate Bark
- Check out our recipe here: Low-Carb Chocolate Bark.
- Melt chocolate and sprinkle on your favourite toppings like freeze-dried berries (yum!), seeds, or toasted coconut flakes. Kids love this creative process!
#3 Low-Carb Pizza
- Who doesn't love pizza? Try using chicken mince as the base: Low-Carb Pizza, or use fat-head pizza dough: Fat-Head Pizza.
- Kids have fun picking and sprinkling their toppings!
#4 Chocolate Mousse
- My kids are obsessed with this mousse! My toddler asks for it every time he spied a carton of eggs. Check out the recipe here: High-Protein Chocolate Mousse.
- It's a great recipe for little helpers, as the boiled eggs get mashed up anyway, making it perfect for practising peeling.
#5 Chocolate Strawberries
- An oldie but a goodie! The sweetness of strawberries pairs perfectly with dark chocolate. Kids love dipping and drying fruit in chocolate.
Once it's all done, we have a special clean-up song, and there is a race to get the kitchen clean before then end of the song. It works (most of the time).
Happy Cooking!
These little snacks and treats are not only delicious but also offer a healthier alternative to traditional snacks. So, get ready to make some yummy food and have some fun with your kids this school holidays.
With love and great health
